Reviews for R.H. BISHOP BOOKS

I enjoyed this book immensely. The author clearly has affection for her characters and provides a unique perspective on the legal system and the region. Twists and turns, surprises and heart, Errant Justice introduces a new series by a new author. You can’t stuff this work into a traditional sub-genre box. It’s not cozy, it’s not gritty; it will appeal to all fans of mystery. Can’t wait for the next in series.
— R.L. Jackson, (review of Errant Justice)
Errant Justice is a great read for the literate mystery reader. R.H. Bishop does a masterful job of creating characters whom you want to follow. The interaction of Armando and Lucy is engaging and keeps the reader turning pages. For those of us who avoid mysteries with gratuitous violence and graphic sex, Errant Justice is a delight. For her first novel in this series, R.H. Bishop lays the foundation for sequels that will satisfy readers who want more of Armando and Lucy,

Armando is smart, funny, stylish, outspoken and creatively stumbling his way though the high powered legal world. He’s a young gay man, looking for and making mistakes in, life and love, which is honest, entertaining and heartfelt. Together with Lucy, his brilliant yet testy boss, the two of them find the clues, before the police, in this fast moving, “can’t put it down”, legal thriller. Trust me, you won’t see the end coming.

This is a well-plotted and polished mystery set in the legal world of San Diego. It features one of the best new “Watsons” (or “Archie Goodwins,” for you Nero Wolfe fans) I have encountered in awhile. Armando is sassy, smart, and a breath of fresh air, and I enjoyed his relationship with the more enigmatic Lucy. Can’t wait to read more!

A great read. Loved the accurate & realistic San Diego setting & the distinctive characters. Looking forward to reading more in the series.

I love this romp of a mystery, and I’m not even a mystery fan! It has everything: love, lust, murder, kidnapping, snark, fashion sense, cross-border intrigue, humor, surprising twists and turns, and an ending to make you think. Plus, as a resident of San Diego, I appreciate the authentic glimpses of life in our binational metropolis. Get this book and give yourself a treat!

I was absolutely mesmerized by this wonderful book by a very talented new author. The character development was extraordinary . I especially loved Armando. His character was so developed that I feel as if I know him. The plot was exciting and very creative
Congratulations to R.H. Bishop for a work well done.

This book is well written, the characters are fascinating, and the plot is constantly absorbing. I hope there are more books to come in this series.

I couldn’t put the book down. Mesmerizing account of the criminal justice system and the personalities of the players. As a criminal defense lawyer, I found the character portrayals to be very realistic.
— A. Liss (review of Errant Justice)
Loved this book. It is engaging and compelling. I could not figure out the mystery myself so it was a good read! I look forward to more adventures from these characters.

This is the best book yet in a fresh and intelligent mystery series that has a lot of heart. The gay cruise ship is a perfect setting for Armando and his party-loving friends, and also a great metaphor for the class conflicts among the elite Epitome Tower guests and their butlers. I loved the subplot about Lucy dealing with her sister’s hoarding problem. If you like Jody Picoult, you will like these well-developed plots. I read a lot of mysteries and often guess what will happen, but I didn’t see this ending coming. R.H. Bishop definitely draws you along a lot of rabbit trails before you get to the exciting finish!
— M.Jones (review of Cruising to Death)
I was so happy to get this new murder mystery. It is a whopping good tale. And I love the lawyer and paralegal pairing of Lucy and Armando. Their dynamics work together well.

I loved the engaging characters in this book. They are unforgettable. I have strong visual memories of the scenes in this story,(that will stay with me), and Errant Justice-R.H. Bishop’s other mystery. And omg the twists and turns are so much fun. It is nice to read a mystery with such engaging characters!

Second book is even better than the first . For those who enjoy a fun, modern and challenging mystery.

Workaholic attorney Lucy Sanders is the legal pro here, but her much-younger gay Latino office assistant Armando Felan carries this delightfully twisting investigation on designer-clad shoulders all the way to a conclusion you will NOT see coming! Skillfully weaving a web of contemporary social issues - asylum, drug cartels, Mexican-American life on the border, gay male relationships (no porn, just relatively “clean” romance) and the ever-difficult-for-women conflict between personal aspirations and the demands of professional life, Bishop creates an often-amusing but spellbinding tale worth reading more than once just for its unusually realistic details. Lucy isn’t a svelte 20-something millionaire lawyer with a hunky firefighter boyfriend in a beachfront penthouse; she’s real. And so is struggling, sometimes-annoying but definitely maturing-into-a-crack-investigator Armando. The trail winds through multiple legal settings (including a jail) without incomprehensible legal jargon but lots of atmosphere, revealing professional hierarchies and hassles outsiders never see. all in pursuit of a maddeningly elusive truth too many are determined to hide. Lucy and Armando are a fascinating legal “odd couple” polishing skills I hope to see again and again.

I really enjoyed this book. The dialogue is clever and witty, yet flows naturally from the situations and characters. I felt like I came to know these characters (especially Armando) who frequently screws things up with his impulsive actions. The author even fleshes out Armando’s family so that i can visualize them as well. I hope that future books in this series give us more time with his boss, Lucy, who is an interesting character and undoubtedly has a fascinating background, waiting to be revealed. The ending is a surprise, but all the clues were there all along, nothing is hidden from the reader. I definitely recommend this read, and I look forward to reading Bishop’s next book.

This debut novel by a gifted writer is a great read. The plot is clever and keeps you guessing. The characterizations are delightful and the relationship between Armando and his mother is beautiful. I have acquired new friends in Armando and Lucy, and hope to meet them again soon.
— L.Natarajan (review of errant justice)
I really enjoyed this book. The story had me hooked from beginning to end and I wasn’t able to guess what happened. (Sometimes mysteries are guessable and once I figure it out I enjoy them less. This one wasn’t like that at all! I was surprised at the end.)

The characters are a lot of fun; I enjoyed the hero’s relationship with his family and friends and lovers and they added depth to the book. It was a quick read and I look forward to reading more of the characters’ adventures!
— Sarah (review of Errant Justice)
Superb! An engrossing tale of crime and betrayal narrated by a fashion-conscious, aesthetically refined gay Hispanic paralegal who works for a famous criminal lawyer. The characters are as intriguing as the plot. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
— C. Clague (review of Errant Justice)
So looking forward to reading the second mystery after this one. Loved the twists and turns, and fun and quirky characters - Armando and Lucy. It is always fun to re-read after you know who did it!
— L. Dufour (review of Errant Justice)
This debuting author demonstrates a cunning ability to create believable and sympathetic characters in a charming brain-teaser of a mystery. Looking forward to the next in this new series.

After reading Ms. Bishop’s first two brilliant novels, I had very high expectations for “Cruising to Death.” This book wildly exceeded my expectations . As in her previous novels, the characters were very well developed and engaging. I felt that I got to know them intimately. The plot was nothing short of brilliant and very unpredictable. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the incredible setting on a cruise ship with gay clientele. Ms. Bishop’s descriptions of the ship, the sea, the entertainment, and the off ship excursions were nothing short of jaw dropping. I felt I was there enjoying the water, the sunsets, and the hilarious entertainment complete with the wonderful costumes. I felt that Ms. Bishop captured the essence of a gay cruise. Although it is a fascinating murder mystery, for me, the characters and their stories were the highlight. I would recommend this book to anyone whether gay, straight, or trans. I hated for the book to end and look forward to Ms. Bishop’s next book.

I was anxiously awaiting the release of R.H. Bishop’s novel after reading and loving her first novel “Errant Justice.” The author did not dissapoint. The book was completely engaging. One of the aspects of this book that is masterful is the author’s talent in character development. I feel that I know the characters intimately. They are so rich and likeable despite any flaws. The plot is riveting. I love the way the author introduces subplots as well as the main one. The ending is masterful with excellent twists and turns. I highly recommend this fast paced, absorbing novel.
— L.C. (review of Cheating Death)
I loved “Errant Justice,” the first book of this series, and I can’t wait to read this one! Anyone from an Agatha Christie to a PLL (Pretty Little Liars) fan will appreciate this fun mystery series that entertains with sass and wit.
